how much spending money will i need to travel USA for 1month?
Posted by admin
I am backpacking around California, Nevada and Florida in the summer and am wandering how much spending money will i need for 1 month? I have paid for all my flights and booked most hostels and some attraction passes. My biggest concern is money for public transport, cost of cheap decent food (not maccas or kfc style) and a night out drinking every few days.
HI,
Sounds like a fun adventure…good luck!
There are lots of ways to answer your question. It all depends on whether or not you are trying to be very conservative (which is how I travel) or if money is not a concern for you. I assume it is a concern otherwise you wouldn’t be asking.
Before I give you the long answer, the short answer is that you need only look online to find many great city guides that will give you all the info you need. But if you like to keep the costs down, here are some thoughts for you.
Sounds like major transportation and lodging are mostly taken care of and those are the biggest expenses.
Public tranportation is pretty cheap in most places and many cities offer passes that are good all day or even for several days or a week so be sure to ask around about that. I’ve seen 3 day bus passes for anywhere from 5 to 15 dollars depending on the city. A single ride on a bus may be around $1 or $1.50.
Food can be cheap or expensive depending on how you like to eat. You could find a couple nice pieces of fruit at a produce market and have a nice lunch for a dollor or so. If you avoid corporate chain restaurants you can still find a good dinner for around 7 or 8 dollars. (For example, spaghetti or chicken.) Don’t forget to check the deli section of grocery stores. A local store here (Kroger) offers a whole baked chicken for $5.00. So with a chunk of deli bread you could probably make at least two meals out of that.) And there are lots of places where you can get a good deli sandwich for $5 or less. Lots of local bars and "diners" offer "basket" style dinners (a hamburger or chicken or fish dinner etc) which usually means it includes some kind of potatoes or french fries and salad or coleslaw. These are often 6 or 7 dollars. Are you familiar with Subway sandwich shops? They are all over the place and you can get a variety of decent 12" sandwiches for $5.00 or so and they have a lot of fresh vegetables and condiments and cheeses and several kinds of breads.
I like to make my own meals on the road sometimes and just stop at any grocery store and for just a few dollars you can throw together enough items to make a great meal.
If you like good restaurant meals, expect a lot of variation of price. Many places have great meals in the 10 to 20 dollar range. But look at the menu first because some places would like you to believe their meals are worth 30-50 dollars or more.
As for drinking…if you go to high end places you might pay 10-15 dollars for a drink but ask around and you will find many places that serve beer for maybe $2 or $2.50 and mixed drinks for maybe $3.50-5.00 depending on what you like.
Mostly, with food and drink, it will depend on your preferences. If you like nice, homey, "down to earth" places with real people (like working class) you will find lots of inexpensive places. If you want to be with the "movers and shakers" high-society, upper class, rich folks with lots of money, you will find many places that cater to that crowd too.
I can travel in almost any city, ride as much public transportation as necessary, and have enough to eat for $25 a day. I can MAKE DO with $10 or $15. But I am very frugal. $50-$60 a day and you can live very well (especially if you conserve some days and splurge on other days.)
Sorry for such a long answer but I hope it helps give you an idea.

How can I get a Hotel discount in Boston at the early Feb?
Posted by admin
I want to spend a few days in Boston with my girlfriend in Boston at the early Feb. I did a search from internet and found that Hilton will cause about $200 per night. I wonder how can i find some discount about hotel in Boston?
Thank you!
In most cities you’ll find out most cheap hotels are crack and whore spots. I found this out by experience and found them on most every web search site on the internet. They leave that info. out because most have not had employees or staff ever stay at these so called bargain hotels. Honestly I have found out that nation wide, Holiday Inn was the fairest price for the atmosphere and clients they host. In most every one I spent no more than $120 a night. From Chicago, Detroit, Buffalo, Newark, and Salem, Mass. the choice was by far the best. Most of the other chains were far more pricey. Security is also a factor and I was pleased with Holiday Inn. Good luck and enjoy,,,oh,, ask to be high up and facing the city lights,,,Romantic,,,totally.
Best Poker games and hotel deals in Atlantic City?
Posted by admin
My friends and I are making a trip to Atlantic City on March 2nd til the forth, which is on a wednesday and thursday night. We want to find a hotel/casino that has a great bar(s) and a nice poker room. Any such hotels that also offer a good package deal?
My favorite hotel there is the Borgata. They have a nice poker room, from what I’ve seen (I’m not a poker player). They also have some pretty nice bars.
They don’t have too many packages. http://www.theborgata.com/Main.cfm?Category_1=2000&Category_2=2200 I usually just do the Wake Up Smiling package because it comes out to be less expensive than just booking the room on its own.
What would be the cheapest way to travel within california?
Posted by admin
I’m not sure what the best mode of travel would be. I’m trying to get from San Jose area down to Santa Ana/Aneheim. Thanks!
Bus its legal and local.
Or you could look online for a drive share where you help drive and pay for gas.
lastly you could apply to do a drive and drop for car shippers they
hire you to drive a car from your area to the area near where you want to go its a good chance there is a drive and drop car needing
transported to L.A for a couple cruising wanting their car at the port when they get off the cruise. Check with car porters.
Illegally you could hitch a ride by hitchhiking but its very dangerous
remember Dahlmer picked up his victims so did the green river killer and Ted bundy so if your a woman your not safer by hitching.
try a truck driver or moving over nighter company that might share a trip
with you so he can sleep some of the night for free you drive while he snoozes so he can return right away and do another job.
cheers

Tour states of america in 3-4 years!? Cheapest and best way to approach a major trip like this.
Posted by admin
I’m looking to tour america in a couple years, when i’m finished college and have saved up enough money.
I’m looking to go for 2 to 3 months, with the intention of visiting as much of america as possible.
Main states being, Texas, Alabama, California, Maryland, Washington, Nevada …and as much others as possible.
Considering i will have a limited enough supply of money, i want to spend as little as possible for this 2 month trip.
Flights alone will cost near 600 (euro)
I’m looking for answers from people with experience in touring countries and who have done something similar.
There will be other people with me.
And i will want to do my own thing…possibly always moving from place to place..
I’m up for anything…eg. Camping, Hostels, Renting, Cars, Bus, etc… so go wild in your answers.
Everything helps!
Thanks
I have toured much of the US in my lifetime. Most of it was by car or RV. But that was before gas was outrageously expensive.
You can see and do a lot by bus and by train. I did a cross country train trip and it was great.
Be sure to see Yosemite, Grand Canyon, the shorelines of both Oregon and northern California, the Redwoods, Washington State, the Rocky Mountains, Crater Lake, Mount Rushmore, the Devils Tower, Smoky Mountain National Park, the Catskills, Acadia National Park, there are just so many places…..
I hiked the Grand Canyon (down, camped on bottom, then back out), and only recommend it if you’re very young and strong and are suitably equipped with water and provisions. It’s something you’ll never forget.
This didn’t cost much money… most of the time was camping or very cheap room or motel if it was cold.
Do a little research, plot your course, and have fun!! I am so glad I saw those things when I was younger. Good luck!
Which is the best website for budget hotel booking/ comparing room rates/discounts?

Travelling to bangkok/pattaya(thailand).
I have come across few websites with fake pictures and reviews. Just wanna avoid any surprises as this will be my first trip to southeast asia.
I have used the following www.asiarooms.com and www.sawadee.com without a problem. The reviews are accurate and I have not had a problem with the discounters as far as a cancellation, one with www.asiarooms.com and that was my fault, I picked the wrong dates. hahahaha The credit took about 3 days to happen. There can be a 24 hour time lag for room confirmation so that can be a little irritating. Overall I find these 2 for now have the best rates in general for Thailand and Asia.
You can double check by using www.kayak.com or www.sidestep.com which are travel search engines and check many sites. They seem to push Agoda.com which is good but not always comparable.
You will not find many good deals with Expedia.com or Orbitz.com their room rates are way too high.
Use Kayak.com or Sidestep.com to check for airfares. Get this first. Right now room rates are going down because it’s the rainy season till November. China Airlines, EVA Air are the airlines I fly the most but, with the fuel surcharge I booked Thai Airways direct flight being only a few dollars more, more like USD 50 more but, it is a 17 hour direct flight.
The assumption is that you are flying from the US. Though the search engines probably will help you.
Good luck
Where is the best deals for hotel San Francisco?

its going to be six month and i wanted to do something nice but dont want to spend $200 for a nice hotel does anyone know where i can get some really good deals on hotels and spend about $100?
Hi, I was in the same boat as you. We just got back from San Francisco and I paid $110/nt at a nice hotel in Union Square. The rooms were extremely large (especially for SF) and it was right near the cable car line. The service was great; I really enjoyed our stay. The name was the Donatello and we booked through a local agency. Here is the site: http://www.hotelres.com/
Have fun!
how many days did it take to travel from Nicaragua to California during the California Gold Rush?

how many days did it take to travel from Nicaragua to California during the California Gold Rush???
Sailing by ship from Central America to San Francisco would take approximately three to four months, if a ship was immediately available upon reaching the West coast of Central America.
Here is a quote from the link below: "From the East Coast, a sailing voyage around the tip of South America would take five to eight months, and cover some 18,000 nautical miles. An alternative was to sail to the Atlantic side of the Isthmus of Panama, to take canoes and mules for a week through the jungle, and then on the Pacific side, to wait for a ship sailing for San Francisco."
The third link below describes the route through Nicaragua and may be useful in your research. Here is a quote from that link: "With the advent of the California gold rush in 1849, Nicaragua proved a popular interoceanic shortcut. Cornelius Vanderbilt’s Atlantic and Pacific Steamship Company (APSSCo.) transported supplies and prospectors from the Atlantic, along Nicaragua’s San Juan River, then across Lake Nicaragua to the Pacific…During the Gold Rush, Vanderbilt reduced the travel time to California by establishing a new route through Nicaragua. Although many said the route was not navigable, he personally piloted a small steamboat up the San Juan river to test the route. Vanderbilt’s Nicaragua route was cheaper than Panama – he immediately slashed the prevailing fair of $600 to $400. By one recent estimate Vanderbilt’s route was 600 miles and 2 days shorter to California than through Panama, though another contemporary account related that while the Nicaragua route had the advantage, in distance, over the Panama route, of about one thousand miles; the passage from San Francisco to New York was accomplished in the shortest time by way of Panama."
