From where in California to where in Connecticut? When? Just these items can make a big difference. Airplanes are usually the cheapest and always the fastest. Buses absolutely suck and take forever and may cost as much as an airplane. Amtrak(the only train)is crazy expensive, takes longer than forever and you will still spend some time on a bus. Go to yahoo travel and type in your info and you will get some ideas.

You can take I-5 straight down.. And you’ll pass through some beautiful areas in Northern California..including Mount Shasta or the Redwood Forest.. You can also take 101..which is down the coast.. Save up a lot of money for gas though..

If we had a large earthquake in California triggering a tsunami, how far inland would the tsunami go? I live in Santa Barbara at an elevation of about 200 feet about 2 1/2 miles inland. Serious and scientific answers only please. Thanks!

Do not make the mistake of equating your situation with Japan. In Santa Barbara you do not live near enough to a subduction zone to see that kind of tsunami generated off your coast.

There can be no definite answer because every earthquake is different and every part of the coast is different (angle, slope, breakwaters, etc). If you live on a cliff at 200 feet elevation, you are 100% safe. If you live in a valley that narrows and gradually rises, it’s not as safe as a valley with a sharp rise in elevation, but at your 200 feet, you have an almost nil risk. If I were you, I would not give it a second thought. Nothing is entirely impossible, but some things are just so remote as to be a waste of time and energy to worry about.
If you are seriously going to live in fear forever after this, contact your local civil defense office, or maybe first check the Evacuation Route signs in your area. You will find that people are going to be directed to higher ground like around where you live. RELAX!

If California were to get the "big one" eg. an earthquake and was followed by a tsunami, how far inland would it travel?
well its the big one, so lets just say it was a 9.0 magnitude earthquake in orange county. I live in orange county so it worries me.

California prophesies regarding huge earthquakes will always come true because of the San Andreas and other faults. The Pacific plate is slipping north along the continental plate and California is the fracture zone along that edge. The movement is northwest, which was forcing some of it to sub-duct (slip under) the continental plate north of Cape Mendocino.

This caused the Juan Del Fuca plate to break off the main Pacific plate and it is still sub-ducting under the continental plate. The smaller Explorer and Gorda plates to the north and south of the Juan De Fuca also broke off the Pacific plate and the Juan De Fuca plate. The Juan De Fuca subduction area is called the Cascadia Zone.

The North American continent is moving toward Japan and Asia because the Pacific plate is sub-ducting under the Asian plates, thus the huge quake and tsunami in Japan on 3/11. There is an offshore rift that is spreading and creating more Pacific plate off of the Americas, but the growth rate is smaller than the subduction rate, so the Americas are moving west as their plates follow the Pacific plate west. East of the Americas there is a spreading zone down the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. You can straddle both sides of the spreading rift in Iceland..

Subduction faults can create huge tsunamis. Recent studies predict a 37% chance a mega tsunami up to 100 feet high could hit the Cascadia zone within 50 years.

Seattle, Tacoma and Portland are all inland, but they would still be affected as the huge wave was funneled up their water access-ways. Eureka, and other coastal cities like Crescent City, that border the Juan De Fuca plate, would be totally destroyed by a direct hit from the mega tsunami, just like what just happened in Japan.

We have had 5 mega quakes around the Pacific rim in the last 5 years. This is extremely unusual. The last three are very telling. First we had the huge quake in the SE in Chile, which is still having big quakes inland, then the big quake in the SW in Christ Church, New Zealand, and now Japan in the NW. This greatly increases the probability that we will have a major event in the NE in the very near future. This could range from Alaska, as the Pacific plate slips north, like happened in 1964, or in the Cascadia zone as the Juan De Fuca is forced under the continental plate as in 1700, or both.

Huge quakes on the Cascadia zone, as the Juan De Fuca is subducted under the continental fault, usually immediately precede huge quakes on the northern San Andreas fault as the pressure is relieved to the north. In other words, when the Juan De Fuca gives way, the Pacific plate slips northward along the San Andreas fault.

The Cascadia zone ends at the south at Cape Mendocino, the western most projection of the North American plate, so subduction quakes do not happen south of Cape Mendocino, which also helps provide a "shield" from a tsunami direct hit, though waves would generate back in to the coast the farther south of the cape you go.

San Francisco, for instance, would probably have a greater tsunami than Fort Bragg, which is just south of the cape, but both would be impacted. Japan has huge tsunamis when the Cascadia zone slips as it is right across the ocean from it.

California gets hit by other tsunamis generated throughout the Pacific rim of fire. Though very small, we even got part of the tsunami generated by the huge Indonesian quake in Sumatra in the Indian Ocean. Funny thing about waves is they finally spread throughout the entire world of oceans, no matter how large or how small. They get smaller, but they never completely go away.

How far a tsunami travels inland depends on its size and the local topography. It also depends on how high the tide is. In California tides range from about -2 ft. to 7 ft. Most of the California coast is protected by headlands that keep small tsunamis from cresting the bluffs, but bays and valleys are very exposed. A large tsunami would penetrate deep inland up the Sacramento river and swamp the whole San Francisco Bay area and some of the inland valleys like Napa.

Ok so before you add racist answers read this first please

I have a friend who’s Mexican an illegal here but he’s planning to travel from Los angeles to Georgia in a bus but the cheapest ticket makes him travel through Arizona but he’s afraid cause of the law in Arizona would behave any problems or should take another route like traveling first to Colorado theto Georgia?

By the way he’s going back to his country so be happy there’s gonna be 1 illegal alien less

Just because someone wishes for others to follow the laws the rest of us follow doesn’t mean we are racist.

And, I’m not sure, but if he is very concerned, I would suggest taking a route that avoids Arizona for a few extra dollars. If it means the difference in being arrested. Next time, he should really try for a Green Card, though. If we have to follow our countries laws, others need to as well, not only for our benefit, but for their own.
