Cheap places to stay in Los Angeles, California?

Posted by admin

I’m a college student and I want to go to LA for my spring break. Does anyone from the area have any good recommendations of cheap places to stay there? Hostels, or hotels. Any ideas would be amazing

There are a number of hostels in Hollywood, and one in Santa Monica that are very good. USA Hostels and Banana Bungalow come to mind. Google "Hollywood Hostels" and take your pick.

Average cost of backpacking through Europe?

Posted by admin

I was wondering if anyone has gone backpacking through Europe within the past few years, and how much you have spent? I plan to spend maybe 2 weeks maximum. I’m from California. I plan to stay at hostels, and to travel by train. What was the grand total that you spent on the trip(including plane tickets, food, lodging, transportation). Thank you!

im from canada and when i first went i did a 3 week trip through holland france and spain. i got a eurrail pass thinking it would work out good, i spent about a grand on the pass and thought "oh i can hop on a train and go anywhere through holland france and spain", but i was wrong. in the fine print it tells you to look up the total cost of your train tickets but if your planing ahead you cant really do that cuz they dont ahve the prices till maybe id say give or take a month or 2. also, taking buses is sometimes cheapest, but depending where you wanna go maybe just try to get the tickets. ALSO one thing that really screwed me over is that with the pass you ahve to make reservations, some vary from a couple dollars to close to a hundred. you also cant make reservations unless your there. so thats kinda crappy. when i went i had about a grand and im pretty sure most of my hostels were paid for (sorry it was a couple years ago), but half the money i had was spent on train reservations.

YOU CAN DO IT CHEAP THOUGH! hostels costs probably on average 20 euros a night id say but if its a weekend factor it in. flight return is give or take a grand. if your gonna be flying from cali i suggest taking a flight to uk, then maybe cheap flight? theres also cheap airlines like easy jet in europe so it might be worth the while to fly ssome places instead of train. food can be done cheap if your not picky jsut go to a store, groceries in amsterdam are about 20 euro a week.

so with fflight being around a grand including insurance trains and eveyrhting id say your loooking around 2 grand. let me know if you need any more input or anything. i hope this is helpful

I’m from New York and I was wondering if most California hostels would let me stay?

Sure, why not? You can stay at any hostel.

Laws surrounding crossing state lines and staying in motels/hostels for 18 year old UK Citizen?

Posted by admin

Hi I’m 18 and from the UK and I want to hike from East to West coast of the USA, basically NY – LA. I’m just wondering about laws with crossing state lines and staying in motels/hostels at 18, as a lot of the time I get an impression that at 21 you are no longer considered a minor.

The route I plan to hike is: (This is rough and only early days at the moment)

(Start: New York City) New York – Pennsylvania – Ohio – Indiana – Illinois – Iowa – South Dakota – Wyoming – Idaho – Nevada – California (Finish: Los Angeles)

Any information would be appreciated.

There are no controls going from state to state. There will be a sign on the highway saying something like "Welcome to Pennsylvania" and the mile markers along the road will change, but that’s all.

However, some states require age 21 to rent a hotel room and some require only age 18. You need to use a real travel agency to ensure you will be able to check-in at hotels.

Do realize that New York to Los Angeles is at least 2800 miles/4480 kilometers. If somehow you were able to average 20 miles per day, 7 days per week it would take more than 6 months to hike from NY to LA.

Places to eat & sleep in Seattle, WA?

Posted by admin

I’ll be traveling to Seattle, WA in the coming week from California with very little money and I’m not too familiar with Washington. I’m trying to plan a few things out, like where to eat and sleep (preferably cheap). Any recommendations? Thank you.

What hostels are out there?
Are there any fast food mexican restaurants there (in cali we have taco bell and del taco)?
Any nice vegan restaurants?

If you are interested in staying in a hostel, the Green Tortoise is probably your best bet: http://www.jdoqocy.com/click-3939914-10775740?URL=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.tripadvisor.com%2FHotel_Review-g60878-d1150690-Reviews-a_cja.10775740-a_cjp.3939914-m13092-Green_Tortoise_Hostel-Seattle_Washington.html

It is right across the street from the Pike Place Market that has numerous restaurants, bakeries and farmer’s stands where you can buy fresh fruits and vegetables. You can easily graze your way through it. Seattle is very vegan friendly, so you will find most restaurants have vegan choices. http://www.squidoo.com/Seattle-Pike-Place-Market

There are Taco Bell’s in the Seattle area, but none that I can think of downtown. There are quite a few Taco Del Mars and Blue Water Grills if you are looking for Mexican food – I don’t think either is as cheap as Taco Bell, but you get more food for your money.

I need some information about Marseille city of France?

Posted by admin

I doing a research about Marseille City in France and these are what I can’t find:
1. the 2 examples for imports and 2 examples for exports of this city
2. the menu for the restaurant called Le Miramar located in this city
3. a hostel in this city (need name/address, website, prices, and the reason why is it the best to stay)
4. estimate how long does it take to get to Paris from Daly city (near San Francisco -California) by car(price) and train (price)
thank you everyone for helping me

1. There would be no specific imports and exports for Marseille. Import and export statistics are kept for France only.

2. Here’s a link to Le Miramar’s website, with menu: http://www.bouillabaisse.com/carte.php

3. As I don’t stay in hostels I can’t advise here, but you can check Marseille hostels on: http://www.hostelworld.com

4. Impossible to provide as you cannot drive or take the train from the USA to France – the Atlantic Ocean gets in the way. The only way to get to Paris from the USA is to fly. It would be necessary to travel from Daly city to San Francisco, then take an international flight from there to Paris.

Please – some help with SSI?

Posted by admin

My mother has been managing my SSI income, but now she wants an agent assigned to my case. I am hoping to stay in Hawaii, tending farms for free (wwoofhawaii.org), or possibly just staying in hostels – really anything, so long as I’m there.

But, I’m confused… do California benefits extend to Hawaii under these, or ANY circumstances? If not, then what if I maintained my own SSI – could there be some work-around?

you would need to get a hold of the local social security office and explain the situation with hawaii. They would need to transfer your case there, since different states have different benefit amounts. they can explain how the entire process goes, and help you get certified through hawaii. If this is a temporary move, you may not need to do all that. If it’s a permanent move, then you do. Go to the social security office, schedule an appointment, and sit down and speak with them about it.

What to bring to UK?

Posted by admin

I’m leaving tomorrow for a 2 week trip to the UK. I’ve never been, and I’m used to sunny California. Any thoughts on what I should pack? I am a minor, and we’re staying in hostels. Any help would be much appriciated. Thanks
No tour guide. We’re going for our Girl Scout final trip thing, and our leader hasn’t told us anything. And we leave tomorrrow morning at 5

It will be cooler and wetter in the UK than in California.

A small backpack makes a good carryon bag and will be useful in your daily life. You are allowed two carryons so your purse plus the backpack will be OK.

Hold your checked luggage to ONE regular-size rolling suitcase (not more than 50 pounds).

You don’t need 14 changes of clothes for a 14 day trip: Don’t worry about wearing the same outfit more than once (just be presentable).

If you don’t have easy access to laundry facilities, underclothes can be washed in the bathroom sink. You can also wash shirts & trousers in the bathroom sink – there will be a laundry somewhere if you don’t want to do that. Shampoo takes out grease stains and a little conditioner (or "conditioning shampoo") reduces wrinkles.

1 Jacket, preferably with a hood and at least semi water resistant
1 Sweater
6 Shirts (3 short-sleeve & 3 long-sleeve)
2 Jeans,
2 Not jeans/skirts
1 Short pants
8 Changes of underclothing
2 Pair of comfortable walking shoes
1 or 2 Swimsuits (+ beach clothing & sandals if going to the seaside)
1 Set of gym clothing & shoes (optional)
1 Tavel-size umbrella

Try to choose classics, and items that you can mix and match. Have at least one set of "nicer" clothing.

Take a supply of USA toiletries and over-the-counter medications with you. The same items will be available in the UK, but the brands will be unfamiliar and they will cost more. Ditto with prescription meds.

Wear one set of clothing on the flight. Pack the jacket, sweater, 1 ss shirt, 1 ls shirt, 1 trousers, a set of underclothing, and basic toiletries in your carry-on. (check the rules at www.tsa.gov).

Mark or tag all checked bags with something that makes them more distinct. An example would be to attach a strip of colored tape to each side of the bag. It reduces the chance someone might accidentally pick up your bag by mistake at baggage claim (there are millions of black suitcases). Also clearly tag ALL bags >>> inside and outside <<< with your name and a good phone number + e-mail address (but not your home address). The free tags from the check-in counter are OK.

Send an e-mail message to yourself with your passport number & date of issue. Ditto with the numbers of the credit cards you will take with you. That way the info is easily accessible in case something is lost or stolen.

Hope you have a good trip!
