What’s a great city in the US to spend the summer?
Posted by admin
I want to work in a hostel over the summer, but I’m not sure where. Some place exciting, preferably along the coast, maybe with a good night life, and definitely some where pretty.
I’m thinking about maybe going to either New Orleans, Portland, somewhere in California, or Boston (or somewhere in New England) Any other ideas/suggestions?
Thanks!

Roadtrip from Alberta to California?
Posted by admin
My best friend and I are looking at going on a roadtrip to California next year. It would be great if anyone could give us information on things such as
- fuel cost (there and back)
- hostels
- estimated price
- food
- ideas to save money
- things to see
- how to stay safe (what weapons are allowed, such as bearspray or knives)
- any tips
Websites are also appreciated.
Thanks!
You didn’t give enough information. California takes up 2/3 of the west coast.
The costs vary widely as well. In southern California there is the town of Gilroy for example I stayed in a Motel 6 for 28 dollars per night on the same trip trying to stay in Palm Springs the cheapest room in the city was 148 per night.
whats it like-travelling hostels?
Posted by admin
It doesnt really matter where you stayed- im just wondering what the conditions are like, and if there are always friendly people?
How long (average) did you stay there and the prices?
Its my first time travelling and ill be maybe in a hostel in california, so im just curious:)
Thanks!
Most people who stay at hostels are outgoing and friendly. It sort of goes with the territory. People who are reclusive don’t do hostels.
Hostels are a cheap alternative if you don’t mind giving up some privacy, in exchange for a room that’s about 1/4 the price of a hotel.
How do you plan a road trip?

My friends and I are going to road trip from Washington to California in a little over a month and will travel through California for about three weeks to a month. We are all pretty young (ranging from 17 to 19) and honestly have no idea on where to start to plan a road trip. We were thinking of staying in Hostels or couch surfing with people we meet.
Anyone with travel experience have any advice for novices? Thanks!
Traveling is a great experience in your life that can affect you greatly bad or good. You should have a planning book to write down what you want to do while you’re traveling. You must also be flexible to what happens so if something you wanted to do doesn’t work out, just go w/ the flow. The next thing you should do is make a list of what youre going to take and male sure you have the necessities of everything you’re going to do. I have much more to share but these are the main things. Hope this helped!
Are we allowed to stay in hostels?

My friend and I want to go on a little roadtrip, particularly to San Diego. We just found out about hostels, since it is very cheap. However…I can’t really figure out if hostels are just for international students or for everyone (i.e. college students). We’re from California, but not San Diego. Also…what are your experiences with hostels? Any tips/suggestions? Thank you so much ![]()
You can most certainly stay in our hostels as long as you are 18 or older or have an adult accompanying you and have a valid state issued ID. Here is our website: Hope to see you at one or both of our hostels.

want to buy an old used but running van that i can live and travel in?

i am gng to california for a year my friend and i and we want to do some travelling how much would it be for an old used but running van tat we can live in? are hostels expensive? they dont sem 2 be popping up in google
Anything is expensive compared to living in a work van.
Get one not in too bad shape so it wont attract the police & neighbors.
Make sure it’s totally legal, no broken lights, etc.
Make sure at night no one can see into your sleeping area.
Dont make it looked slept in or lived in.
Does anyone know of any work exchange programs in or near New York City?

I just moved back to New York from California and am so happy to be back, but it’s taking longer than I thought to find a decent job. I’ve been living in hotels in the meantime and am burning through my cash. I’ve heard of hostels with work exchange programs, but many of them don’t allow New York residents to participate. I know how to cook, run errands, and have done things like Math and English tutoring. Anyone know of anything decent? Thanks!

No, but there are many people on Craigslist.org that offer barter services, and search for room exchange or something like that, many people offer free rooms to people who are willing to do their house work for them or tutor their kids and the like. You will also be free to find a regular job in the meantime! I helped my friend find one of these people, a lovely woman gave her her own room AND bathroom in her home with a lock and key for the room for privacy in exchange for her watching her son at night, she has a baby as well and works during the day and watches the boy at night when the owner is out or working. The owner even lets her eat there for free! (She just has to eat whats there though, she has to buy her own stuff if she wants something specific)
Try searching for one of these places. Some of the people are nice and friendly and just need some extra help but can’t afford it (but they have room to put you up instead of paying you) and SOME of them are looking for a servant, so make sure the agreement is quite clear and you agree to it. You will have to go and meet them before they choose you, you will be living in their home after all.
Also search under the gigs section many people offer cleaning jobs other one day-one week jobs in exchange for quick cash. I used to do a lot of house cleaning on the side for spending money through this!

HOTEL/ MOTEL CALIFORNIA _ SOME TIPS PLEASE?

Hi all : )
My family and I plan to make a trip to the USA (California) from Norway for the first time for 2-3 weeks thinking summer time.
But the reason why I write thread is that we may need to know the name of some great family friendly accommodation option (cheap, and relatively "ok"!) motel / hostel / hotel you can stay in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Las Vegas and San Diego.
Anyone got a couple of experiences that tell us? Thanks in advance!
Thank you all for the answers : )
Sunset Magazine specializes in articles about the American West. This month they had an article on hotels for under $150 and I think it would be helpful to you. For some reason they don’t mention Las Vegas though. They include the websites for all of the hotels.

I’ve used their travel suggestions quite a few times and been happy every single time.
NY Hostels with work exchange programs?
Posted by admin
I am 19 and am planning to move to NYC soon from where I currently live, California. Since hotels in the city are too expensive I have been looking into hostels to live in for a while, until I find a job for my own place, since I will be on a budget. Now, about these hostels that offer work exchange for free/reduced accommodation: I have been reading that is says " if you’re an international traveler planning an extended stay…" some hostels can offer you that exchange. Can only an international individual qualify? Because this is something that I am interested in.
Also, some tips about living in hostels, living in the city, etc would be great.
Here is where I got the information:

If you think hostels are too expensive, then everything in NYC will likely be out of your budget. Are you checking monthly rates or just nightly? This site should help: http://www.nycvacationstays.com/hostels.htm
