You dont need a passport to travel in the continental United States, alaska, US Virgin Islands, Guam, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and other US territories. If traveling by airplane you need some type of government issued ID though. But a permanent resident should always have their green card at all times if not it is a misdemeanor.
References :
If you have a valid drivers license, then no you do not need the passport. However, if you do not have a valid license then you can use your passport as your photo ID at the airport. A few months ago my husband had to fly from one state to another and since he didn't have a valid license at the time he had to use his passport as his photo ID in order to get his boarding pass.
References :
No, there's no need to show your passport when you travel domestically in the US, even if you are a tourist. But sometimes they ask you for an ID when you board. A passport could satisfy such need.
References :
Not yet. But it is coming. Soon a passport will be required for domestic travel by air. Your drivers license will no longer be acceptable. I am not sure when this takes affect but I remember reading about it some time back in a newspaper.
References :
Not at all. You are free to move about the 50 states all you want. Just don't try to take plants or alcohol across state lines. Especially going into California - they have many agricultural protections to keep from contaminating crops with parasites and plant virus' that are only in other parts of the country.
