Try the La Jolla Cove suites or the La Jolla Inn, they are in walking distance to the beach, shopping and nightlife.
References :
Danny

Hotels are high during the summer months. I would check out the prices online at sites such as http://www.tripadvisor.com. Then doublecheck their websites. Sometimes hotels will be offering online specials. Then I always call the hotel directly asking what kind of deals or special rates they have. Let them know what discounts you qualify for (AAA, Entertainment Card, AARP, Government Employee, etc.). I often get the best price through a direct call like this.

One of my favorite hotels in this area is Pacific Terrace just south of La Jolla in Pacific Beach. It's a small boutique hotel located right on the beach....walking distance to nightclubs and restaurants. It's pricey though...especially in the summer.
La Shores sometimes has some good rates...it's right on the beach as well. Embassy Suites and Empress are not on the beach but you can sometimes get affordable rates at these hotels. I booked Hilton Torrey Pines in La Jolla for a week off for $120 a night (state employee rate....I just show my paystub).

Good luck! You could check out beach hotels...contact info including links to the hotel web sites at: http://www.sandiego-romantics.com/san-diego-beach-hotels.html
References :
i would recommend the Sheraton La Jolla Hotel or Embassy Suites Hotel San Diego - La Jolla. the Sheraton is right on the water and the Embassy is very close to shopping. and for a great deal check out http://www.travelcusehotels.com. the site is an aggregator which means it searches other sites and presents you with the best deals available. hope this helps!
References :
im in the san diego north county, and while i dont usually frequent la jolla, i suggest Pacific Beach which is really close to there. it has a lot of bars and nightlife. not so much clubs as it is bars that have dancing in them... i dont know if youre into that...
both are by the beach, so theres always that...
also, i suggest at least considering a visit to the gas lamp quarters in SD, even if you dont stay there for the entire night; i know thats even further away, but the gas lamp is blocks of wall to wall restaurants, clubs, and bars...

anyway, good luck, and i hope you have fun!

p.s.
about gaslamp, be at least 21+ or you will end up just eating at a restaurant and going home. most places there have a limit of 21 and above....
