i am not familiar with hostels here.

the place that comes to mind is seattle!
very youth oreinted, culturally diverse.

i also recommend san diego, ca.
it is beautiful there.

if you go to these 2 places, there is also a
foreign country nearby.

that makes it great too.

good luck.
References :
there are 100's of places to visit in America depending on how you are traveling and from what start point. from Texas;however, I would travel to South Dakota to see Mt Rushmore. You can start by going New Mexico,Colorado,Wyoming , than South Dakota. Seeing everything from white sands, to grand canyon
different ranches in Wyoming for fun and games, than to the flinstone park, crazy horse mem. and Mt Rushmore with multiple buffalo, and other different wildlife.
References :
I think it depends on what you want to see. If you're just interested in seeing the famous "sights" that most tourists choose to see- then yes, you check out San Francisco, or the Grand Canyon, or Niagara Falls, or New York City, etc.. But if you REALLY want to "see & experience" the people AND places of my beautiful country, then buy a Greyhound Ameripass- and see the U.S. by bus. The bus goes just about everywhere in the U.S., you can get on & off whenever you like- & see whatever you wish. It's not an easy trip to make...-but it IS one you will never forget. Happy traveling & welcome! :)
