You got the hostel thing covered, now here are some fun and inexpensive things to do. Go hiking in Daley Ranch, Escondido, and check out Dixon Lake, Lake Hodges and the trials around it. Visit the damn, not exactly a Hoover Dam, but interesting. Check out Old Town, the cemetery is free and some of the tombstones are really funny. Check out Balboa Park where there is the World Famous San Diego Zoo and the museums. Stop in at the historic Hotel Del Coronado for an appetizer and drink, it is right on the beach and you can walk through the hotel and admire the architecture and decor. If you have time check out Temecula, the old section is fun to browse and there are a lot of wineries in the area.
References :
There's a great Hostel in Ocean Beach, the same one everyone else recommended...For a backpacker, skater or biker there are tons of things to do. The OB Hostel is 2 blocks from a GREAT beach, that's unique. It's not your preppy beach! There is a great Hostel right downtown in the Gaslamp which is one of the most expensive places to stay if you stay in a hotel. But this place is not pretentious, I walked in by accident one day, going upstairs to what I thought was my lawyers office (Oops, 2 doors down!) everyone was really nice and very cool. You'll be right in the bustle of downtown, close to the trolley, which can take you to Mexico or up North. Have Fun, Either one of these would be great, they're just different; Also I KNOW there's one in Hillcrest but I can't remember the name of it. I think the website I'm going to give you has info on where to call for all San Diego Hostels
References :
sandiegohostels.org
Note: hostel mention in above website that references Pt Loma and Ocean Beach is NOT the one we're all talking about on this site

The OB Hostel is right on the strip in a beach town. There are soooo many things for you to do on a budget.
Beach
Mountains
Desert
The best of all three worlds wrapped into one city
References :
There are two hostels in San Diego that are right on the beach:

Banana Bungalow - 707 Reed Ave. Pacific Beach. Rates are $15-$26
858 273-3060
www.bananabungalowsandiego.com

Ocean Beach International Backpackers Hostel - 4961 Newport Ave. San Diego. Rates are $15 and up. You must have proof of international travel to stay at this hostel.
800 339-7263
www.californiahostel.com

You can have a great time in San Diego with little or no money. There is so much to see and do that is free that you could spend months here and never get bored.

Peace,
