There are hostels, and the Hostels USA in Hollywood is actually a pretty good deal. If I had known about Hostels back when I was that age, I probably would have started traveling at a younger age. Like Sara, I haven't stayed there, but have heard mostly good things. The best rated hostel in LA, just steps off the Walk of Fame. FREE comedy nights in the lounge twice a week, FREE all-you-can-make pancakes every morning, and tours and activities every day of the week. They reimburse your airport transfer if you're staying at least two nights, which is a nice touch. It attracts an energetic crowd. I went by there years ago, and I doubt it's changed. It's not a high-class hotel, and some people who are used to a little more courtesy and customer service don't really care for the staff. As for me, if I'm a twenty-something in Hollywood looking to have a great time and need a place to crash, then this is it. The USA Hostel is the one I would recommend in that area.
