I was an exchange teacher in Europe and learned a lot of the methods while there. Since I have been retired we go to Europe or elsewhere 2 months out of the year, and we typically spend less in one month than most American travelers do in 10 to 14 days. We don't backpack or stay in hostels and we have a great time. Sometimes you can get better deals from one place one time and another at another time. Just be willing to look around. Expedia, Hotwire, Travelocity, etc. Just look around and enter your dates and destination and look at the prices. They all pretty much work about the same, just some give better rates than others. P.S. Sometimes it is actually better to do it yourself and call the airline to talk to a rep as well as call the hotel and talk to someone. Feel free to try and haggle with them some or get the best rate out of them. It is usually not all that hard.
